The Prince of Wales…

A few weeks ago I was invited along to the opening night of the Prince of Wales Sheffield. When I was 18 I used to go to the Prince of Wales (it used to be called the Real Macaw and was a really popular place to go drinking!) and Darren & I had been for a few meals before the refit so I was looking forward to seeing what changes had been made! I was able to take along 3 guests so decided it might be a good idea to take the whole family as I’d been asked to give a review on the new menu and having 2 children meant we could give everything a try!

After a quick hello to the team we headed over to the Gin bar… yep the GIN BAR!! There’s a spot at the end of the main bar with a huge selection of fruits and botanicals so you can make your G&T your own! I chose a White Peach (Tanqueray mingled with aromatic, herbal Martini Bianco and made long and luxurious with white peach purée and Fever-tree tonic) then added raspberries & lychee, it was so good!!! The children both chose a soft drink and Darren had a Peroni.

Look at all the extras! I loved personalising my G&T!

We grabbed a table by the bar and were treated to a sampling platter of starters from the new menu…

Everything was so good!

Ellie & I had a wander around the restaurant and bar area which has had a huge overhaul, it feels really cosy and the decor is beautiful. Lots of leather, wood and glass, right up my street! We also popped into the loos (Very important!) and I’m pleased to report they passed the test! Lots of sinks, lovely lighting and plenty of mirrors!

After our look around we were seated at a table and enjoyed a delicious dinner! We we’re able to choose a starter, main and desert (all included as part of our invitation) I went for the Crispy Karaage Chicken with cucumber ribbons, mooli, kale & cauliflower couscous salad and warm katsu sauce. It was quite large for a starter (for me) but the chicken was moist and the sauce was so tasty! I really enjoyed it.

Darren had the Calamari which was lovely and crisp and Ellie chose the Pate, she ate the lot! (no starter for Charlie)

For mains I had the 7oz fillet steak with an ale-glazed shallot tart topped with Cropwell Bishop custard, Stilton & walnut crumb and twice-cooked chunky chips. I think you can really judge a restaurant by how a steak is cooked and I’m so happy to say that mine was perfect! I like medium rare so if you’re not fond, skip past now!

I’m drooling just typing this!!

Darren had the Wagyu Burger with smoked Irish Cheddar, crispy onions, tomato relish, sweet potato fries and aioli. Darren bloody loves a burger and he really enjoyed this one!

Charlie had the Pollo American Pizza (Chicken, Portobello mushrooms, and mozzarella on a BBQ tomato base) and declared it the BEST pizza he’d ever eaten! He still talks about it now… it set a bench mark for all pizzas since!

Honestly it was MASSIVE! I couldn’t believe he ate it all!

And from the childrens menu Ellie had Chicken breast strips with coconut tzatziki, carrot sticks and a warm tortilla.

Next deserts! I must admit that by now I was feeling so full but there was no way I was missing out on pudding… NO WAY!! I’d already decided I wanted to try the Vanilla Creme Brûlée so I unfastened my top button and plowed on!

How cute is the little tea cup! I’m happy to report I ate it all!

Darren had the sticky toffee pudding which was served warm with Bourbon vanilla ice cream… Oh. My. Gawd it was so light!! Normally I can find steamed puddings stodgy but this definitely wasn’t!

And both children had the Chocolate brownie… again more clean plates!

Ellie is taking this blogging lark very seriously… (no eating until we’ve taken the pictures mummy!)

We had such a lovely evening and the food was really good, so much so we have booked to go back with friends later this month (I really want to try their Pork Belly with scallops, it looks right up my street!) The children had a great time and Ellie had no problem choosing from the kids menu, there was plenty of delicious options for her! I do hope reading this has made you hungry and if you are local, you definitely need to pop by and sample the new Prince of Wales!

Tracey xoxo

Thank you so much to the Prince of Wales for inviting us along, as always all words and opinions are my own.
